THE END. The Last Podcast Episode
In this episode, I'll be talking about the end of my podcast, "Bingeproof Brain." While I initially planned to continue the podcast after having a baby, the realities of motherhood have made it difficult for me to find the time and energy to create content. My priorities have shifted and my passion for the topic of binge eating recovery has lessened.

How I stopped eating junk food for 2,5 years
In this episode, I dive into my personal journey of giving up ultra-processed foods for over two and a half years. I address the misconceptions about labeling food as 'junk' and why it's essential to avoid assigning morality to what we eat.
I share how my journey began in 2013 when I transitioned to a vegan lifestyle for health, ethical, and environmental reasons. I eliminated processed foods from my diet. I discuss the factors that helped me succeed, including moving away from discomfort, aligning with my values, and witnessing positive changes like clear skin and weight loss.
I also opened up about how I was influenced and, at times, 'brainwashed' by online health influencers who advocated for a specific lifestyle. This led me to follow their advice without questioning, which eventually impacted my life negatively.
I touch upon how I ultimately stopped my strict dietary regimen due to health concerns, financial factors, and personal circumstances. I provide insights into what helped me stay on track and the importance of paying attention to your body's feedback.
Tune in to learn more about my journey, the lessons I've learned, and why critical thinking is essential in making informed choices about your health and lifestyle.

Why am I so stupid to binge on sugar?
Did you know that when you pose a question, your brain, for a brief moment, will focus its resources solely on answering that question? This is a mental reflex called 'instinctive elaboration'.
If you find yourself asking low-quality questions such as:
“Why do I have no self-control when it comes to food?”,
“Why is intuitive eating working for everyone, but not me?”,
“Why am I still struggling with binge eating despite my best efforts to stop?”;
your brain will seek answers to these questions.
These answers don’t help you, don’t serve you, and don’t put you in the right mindset.
The higher quality the question, the higher quality the answer will be, so instead of asking yourself low-quality questions, ask high-quality, empowering questions that support you in a positive way. Let your brain come up with creative and motivating replies, that will create an emotion that inspires you to take action.
This week, I will explain how to start asking the right questions that will guide your eating disorder recovery in the direction of real food freedom.

Do you have to control your Inner Pig?
“Never Binge Again” by Dr. Glenn Livingston is a book that asks you to label all thoughts demanding excess food as "the pig" (or whatever deprecating term you prefer). It's a straightforward approach that gives you no excuses. This book appeals to people who are fans of a little tough love. But isn’t there already enough self-loathing and blaming that comes with binge eating, so we don’t need extra?
In today’s podcast episode, I’m going to discuss why I personally dislike the Never Binge Again(TM) Method to stop binge eating.

Why do you binge more before your period
It is not uncommon for women to experience an increase in appetite or to engage in binge eating behavior before their period.
Cravings are a normal part of the menstrual cycle and it is okay to give into them, but for people who struggle with an eating disorder, engaging in binge eating behavior, or consistently overeating, can have negative effects on physical and mental health.
If you turn to food for comfort or to cope with the emotional symptoms of PMS, such as mood swings or irritability, listen to today’s show.
In this episode, I’m going to share with you 3 main reasons for an increase in appetite in the luteal phase of your cycle and how to tame your desire to eat more.

Binge eating recovery without therapy and coaching
It is challenging to recover from an eating disorder. But it doesn’t mean it’s impossible – so many people all around have been able to recover from their eating disorder. You may find it surprising, but the rates of “spontaneous recovery” (overcoming an eating disorder without professional treatment or formal help) are relatively high for people struggling with binge eating.
In case you feel hopeless and helpless, in today’s episode, I want to remind you that it’s possible for you to make a full recovery despite not having received professional treatment.

Why do you desire slim body? [Mimetic desire]
Many people will choose weight loss as a New Year's resolution.
Why do we so desperately desire weight loss?
Have you ever questioned whether the body aesthetics you pursue might be influenced by outside factors that have nothing to do with you?
Ever considered that your goal to build an amazing butt isn’t authentically yours...but someone or something else's?
Ever considered that you aren't being fully responsible for choosing to diet?
Or that your “body goal” only mimics the desire of the culture around you?
French social scientist, René Gérard calls this "Mimetic Desire", the theory that you unconsciously mimic the desires of others. We often want things because others have them or want them. Usually, we don’t “desire” anything without outside influence.
In today’s podcast episode I want to share with you how mimetic desire, in a sense, is responsible for the formation of our negative body image and disordered eating behaviours. I’m also going to mention a research study conducted in Fiji that shows how being exposed to Western shows influenced the incidence of eating disorders amongst Fijian females.
This episode encourages self-reflection by showing you that our desires don’t come from within; rather, we mimic what other people want. However, just because you are not the sole author of your desires, that doesn’t mean you can’t begin to take ownership of them.

How to avoid Last Supper Syndrome
Tell me if this is you:
You stuff yourself all weekend long in preparation for Monday because starting Monday you’re going to be “good”
You overeat every night because you keep telling yourself “I’ll be good tomorrow”
You finish all the chips, cookies, candies, and ice cream in your house to prepare yourself for Monday time to be “good”
Essentially, you’re thinking: “I am going to eat this now since I’m not going to be able to have this in the future."
This well-known phenomenon is often referred to as the Last Supper Effect or Syndrome. You've likely experienced this before starting a new diet, because who knows when you'll be able to enjoy all those off-limits foods again! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Last Supper Effect is where you indulge and overeat when anticipating a period of dietary restriction.
In today’s podcast episode I want to share with you how even the anticipation of restriction can lead to an increased impulse to over-consume that food, often alongside feelings of lack of control. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Reprogram your brain’s Reticular Activating System to recover from binge eating
In today’s episode, I’ll share with you guys how you can intentionally reprogram a region of your brain called RAS (Reticular Activating System), so that it starts supporting your recovery goals.
You see, RAS protects your brain by filtering information and presenting to your consciousness only a small fraction of available data. Moreover, RAS seeks information that confirms your pre-existing beliefs (aka confirmation bias).
All of this means, that RAS keeps you stuck in an eating disorder mindset. RAS makes sure that all of your current unhelpful beliefs about yourself, your body, and food are reaffirmed.
Binge eating recovery requires massive mindset shifts and it starts with re-conditioning your RAS to allow in the information that challenges your current limiting beliefs.

Is binge eating really THAT pleasurable?
Do you still perceive binge eating as a form of enjoyment? If yes, then today’s podcast episode may be an eye-opening message you need to hear.
This episode explores:
Misconceptions about binge eating (like binge eating relieves stress and combats boredom)
How does the Law of diminishing returns and hedonic adaptation impacts the pleasure you derive from binge eating?
The Opponent Process Theory (OPT) and its implications when it comes to “pleasurable” activities like overeating.
How pleasurable activities, like eating highly processed foods, leave you in “the dopamine deficit state”
How too much pleasure-triggering dopamine upsets the delicate balance between pleasure and pain.
How binging changes your hedonic set point.
Is the “dysphoria-driven relapse” real reason why you keep self-sabotage with food by going back to binge eating?
How to reverse those neuroadaptations so you get out of the binge eating habit cycle and make peace with food forever.

Break neuro-associations and eat without guilt
Ever wondered why certain situations or environments make you more susceptible to binge eating? Perhaps it’s because of conditioned neuro-associations that have been created in your brain thorough your life.
Neuro-associations are the links that are created between what you experience and the emotions and thoughts connected with it.
In today’s podcast episode, I want to talk about:
Differences between neuro-associations and habit
Ways to recondition your neuro-associations around food
How to rewire your neural pathways to link positive emotion with eating “fear foods” so that you can enjoy your favorite foods without feeling guilty
How do your thoughts create your feelings and how to dismiss unhelpful thoughts to create a more pleasant experience
How to intentionally create more positive neuro-associations

Such paradoxes are often difficult to accept and understand, especially because at first they seem neither logical nor helpful.
As you listen to this podcast episode, however, the many paradoxes of eating disorder recovery will become more understandable. Embracing five paradoxical mindsets of ED recovery other can be a real game-changer for you.

Stop self-sabotaging with food by resolving inner conflict
Do you feel like part of you wants to be healthier, but another part of you just can’t resist eating off-plan?
Binge Eating is considered to be a form of self-sabotage that is directly connected to inner conflict. Research studies show that indeed, cognitive conflicts as predictors of binge eating disorder in patients with obesity.
Inner conflict is a result of an interaction between different parts of you that are trying to protect you and help you survive. There are many different methods that address working with “different parts of you” including Internal Family Systems.
The traditional approach suggests that you can try to resolve internal conflict that leads to binge eating by listening to what different parts of you want to communicate and by trying to bring balance and harmony to your inner world.
In today’s podcast episode I want to propose an alternative way of stopping self-sabotage. I’m going to show you that internal conflict is just an illusion created by your own habitual thinking. It’s normal that we are all getting caught in conflicting wants and desires, but as long as we see our thoughts as just thoughts and we stay closer to the desires of our authentic self, we don’t need to over-analyze functions and roles of (supposedly) different parts of us.

Summer vacation with binge eating sucks
Eating disorders don't take a summer vacation which means that a long summer break can be challenging for all people struggling with eating disorders.
Travel used to be a total train wreck for me. I was trapped in a pattern of restricting and binging. I would binge eat in secret whenever I felt stressed or deprived in any way. During my struggles with BED (Binge Eating Disorder), I was really fed up with feeling 'frumpy and grumpy' every summer. I hated feeling so insecure every holiday when I should really be having the time of my life, during the best season of the year.
Back then all I had was a burning desire to have a peaceful holiday without worrying and obsessing about food.
Today my summer holidays look so different! In June, my boyfriend and I took a vacation to Crete. We had the best time ever. No food anxiety. No swinging from all to nothing, from restriction to bingeing, from bad to good. I didn’t worry about overeating. I enjoyed my food and listened to my body. Binge eating recovery turned me into a person who can enjoy their summer holidays without being constantly worried about food. I explode with gratitude for my past self who was able to combat my eating disorder voice.
In today’s podcast episode, I’m comparing what summer vacations looked like for me when I had an eating disorder and what summer holidays look like right now. I’m sharing this with you to show you how life can change in a few years when you stop binge eating and learn how to eat intuitively.
With the summer vacation not far away, this episode is a must-listen!

Eating disorders are symptoms of patriarchy
Since we live in a culture fixated on female thinness, it’s important to realise how early exposure to Western ideals of beauty and femininity generates body dissatisfaction and eating disorders. Diet culture distracts women’s attention from the real issues like injustices and inequalities of the world, while men built empires.
Since patriarchy is one of the indirect factors that contribute to the development of eating disorders, including binge eating, we need to expose gender inequality and patriarchism.
The topic of today’s podcast episode is the intersection between eating disorders and patriarchy.
I’m also going to share with you a story from my own life of how I recently decided to challenge gender roles in my own intimate relationship.

Binging when feeling low (the concept of Mood Elevator)
Lower mood and anxiety have been linked to increased binge eating and decreased control of cravings. When you feel sad, frustrated, or angry, you want to take your mind off things that trigger negative feelings. Using food to soothe and ease unpleasant emotions is a short-term solution that often leads to even more regret and guilt.
Want to stop binge eating, live your life with less stress, healthier relationships, and a better quality of life?
Discover how becoming aware of your moods and the power of your thoughts can transform your life!
In today’s podcast episode, I want to share with you the concept of Mood Elevator, a simple tool that I effectively use to explain the relationship between mood and unhelpful habits like binge eating.
I’ll discuss how our thinking creates our mood, the characteristics of the higher and lower mood states, and how to spend more time on the higher floors of the Mood Elevator and limit the damage you do to yourself and others when you drop down to the lower floors.

The Dark Side of Self-Help Books
Let's talk about the toxic self-help industry and its biggest problems.
Do you follow personal growth accounts? Bought self-help books? Courses? But, what if the industry that promises to make you "better" is actually making everything worse?
The self-improvement industry thrives on the myth that there is something wrong with you that needs to be improved. The dark side of self-improvement is that it feeds on our insecurities.
As a freshman at the University, I felt very insecure about myself, so I started consuming as much self-help content as possible. I wanted to figure out "what is wrong with me". However, when I finished the book, I'd move onto the next self-help book I deemed crucial and it put me in a loop of wanting more and more without putting anything into practice from the books I had read.
In this podcast episode, I’ll take a dive into the dark side of self-help, and the traps that may lie in wait for those who enter this world. I’ll be sharing with you pitfalls and rip-offs of the self-help industry to avoid.

No BS (and sustainable!) weight loss advice
If you ever wished you had a no B.S. way to lose fat because things you have tried in the past to drop a dress size in a week just haven’t worked, then this is for you. There is so much information out there on weight loss and nutrition, that it’s become too confusing for people to understand which plan is the ‘right plan’ for them. But when it comes to nutrition, there's no one-size-fits-all solution.
The idea of just eating less is simple, yet it doesn't account for mindset or environment influencing food choices. That’s why I want to detail the most important strategies for long-term weight loss success.
In this podcast episode, I will be sharing my thoughts on how to sustainably lose weight the right way that allows you to live your life to the fullest.

How to radically change BODY IMAGE thoughts?
Body image disturbance is a relevant factor in Binge Eating Disorder, similar to other eating disorders. Changing the way you approach and think about your body could help you overcome binge eating. However, changing a deeply held belief you have about yourself can seem impossible.
In a society saturated with thin body image ideals and weight-loss mania, it’s easy to get caught up in what you think you’re “supposed” to look like in order to be worthy.
Listen to today's podcast to learn how you can change the way you think about your body regardless of what size your body is.
I’ll teach you the practical steps to effective body image work and why affirmations don't work but a thought ladder does.

Going to therapy and still binging? Listen to this!
If you’ve been in therapy for years, this episode is for you.
Most people think you need to process all your traumas and make peace with the past in order to uncover the root cause of binge eating. But this might be the worst advice that could actually hurt you. Sure, a well-targeted, brief intervention can be very effective in helping you make sense of your experience. Thanks to CBT I discovered how my thoughts create my feelings and in a way, this changed the trajectory of my life. But personally, I didn’t see the point in trying to analyse the content of thoughts I had in the last 20-30 years of my life.
The more I talked about my problems, the more problems appeared and I indulged in my own brokenness and strife. By trying to figure out what was wrong with me, I was perpetuating the idea that I’m broken. The truth is, there's nothing wrong with me or you.
I’m not saying that we should be turning a blind eye to our problems, but we need to recognise when we crossed the line, when talking about problems creates lower mood and more mess in our life.
Most therapies encourage you to focus on solving your problems, examining or trying to change thoughts, rather than an understanding of how thought works.
Once you have an insight into how thought works, you don’t need to spend hours talking to a therapist because you know that there’s no point in examining stories that are always subject to change.

I wish I was anorexic
To all the people who've ever said “I wish I could be anorexic for a few weeks to lose some weight"… I get that. I had the same disordered eating thoughts. As a binge eater I felt like a gluttonous pig who had no self-control. I was kind of jealous of anorexics who seemed to be more "disciplined" compared to me. I felt like such a failure for not being able to solely restrict.
If you’ve ever had similar disordered thoughts, listen in this week. I’m sharing some of my most disordered thoughts about wanting to develop anorexia, being sick to experience rapid weight loss and how feeling ashamed of those kinds of thoughts can prevent making progress in your binge eating recovery.

Going vegan to overcome binge eating? Yay or nay?
Is it possible to be vegan and succeed in eating disorder recovery? For most vegans in ED recovery, the answer comes down to their motivation and intention behind their decision to be vegan.
Full recovery from an eating disorder doesn’t include dieting or restricting, no matter how “healthy” it may seem, but what about people coming from a place of ethics?
Despite lots of mixed views, I believe that it is possible to recover from binge eating on a vegan diet and it should not be mistaken for a restrictive diet.
However, I also think that veganism should not be a choice made whilst actively suffering from an eating disorder or in the recovery journey.
It all comes down to your intentions and how disordered eating may or may not be showing up in your veganism. Are you truly in it for ethics or do you believe that eating vegan is the key to everlasting health or weight loss?
This episode is for everyone experiencing disordered eating thoughts and behaviors as a vegan/ plant-based eater.

5 Unconventional ways to stop binge eating
To stop binge eating you need to binge. Wait. What? It doesn't make sense for you, right. You just want to stop bingeing overnight. Well… based on what we know about the brain's plasticity, if you're trying to break a bad habit, you have to override it with a new one. It's unlikely that urges disappear overnight. Use triggers and urges from an old habit to cue a new routine. Even if you end up binge eating, you can modify the habit by eating sitting down, eating without distractions, chewing your food properly, etc. Slower and more mindful binges give you the opportunity for self-reflection during the binge. You're no longer driven by your primitive brain's desires, but you can easier access your "wise mind".
In today’s podcast episode I want to give you 5 unconventional strategies that can help you modify your binge eating habit cycle and give you the opportunity to shift your perspective around binging and urges.

Is Food Addiction Real?
When you struggle with binge eating, you may wonder if food addiction is real? Why is highly processed food (aka “junk food”) so addictive, and am I addicted to food? In this episode of Bingeproof Brain Podcast, I want to share with you my opinion about food addiction and whether science on that matter is clear. Before we get into it, I just want to say that I have tremendous empathy for those of you struggling with the feeling of food addiction. I remember myself having powerful cravings for calorie-dense foods despite feeling full, binge-eating these foods, feeling food guilt after having these foods, and being unable to stop all of this despite knowing its unhealthy outcome. While there’s no denying that all of these behaviors are very real and disturbing, were they really the result of my food addiction? Listen to today’s podcast episode to find out!

[Client chat] Battling with bulimia for FOUR decades and spending years in OA
I'm so honoured to have onboard today one of my 1:1 coaching clients, Frannie. She has an incredible story to share, since her eating disorder was older than I am, which means that she struggled with bulimia for almost four decades!
As a health care worker who secretly battled her bulimia for almost four decades, she connected to the spiritual and service elements of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and then OA (Overeaters Anonymous). Though she did quit drinking and she’s been sober for more than 10 years, regular meeting attendance, sponsorship, book studies, and daily service weren’t enough to eliminate her bulimia and binge eating.
You are especially going to LOVE this episode because Frannie talks through:
-how she tried multiple different avenues to heal her bulimia (inpatient recovery programs, 12 steps programs, etc.)
-mindset shifts that she needed to make in order to let go of the idea that she’s a food addict with a broken brain
-how she’s been learning how to trust her body to self-regulate her appetite without a need to purge or control and measure the food on her plate
-how brain-based approach to healing eating disorder helped her in finding food freedom
-how coaching and eliminating disordered eating behaviours allowed her to get her creative juices flowing
With the aid of her supportive husband and our coaching sessions, she transformed her mindset, relationship with herself and sincerely embraced a new way of life with more food freedom.
As you can see, lots of juiciness today for you!
So please enjoy this episode of the Bingeproof Brain Podcast with my former client, Frances.

Ironic way change works
So you’ve been struggling with binge eating for decades and all methods you’ve tried failed you. You began doubting if a normal relationship with food is even possible for you. You’ve been working hard on preventing yet another binge eating episode so that there isn’t much space left in their brain for anything else. However much work you’ve been putting into your eating disorder recovery, you’re still stuck.
What if expanding a huge amount of time and effort figuring out strategies for fighting your urges to binge is unnecessary? What if what we need is serenity and insight because the real, deep lasting change from the inside out, not from changing your circumstances or behaviour?
In this episode, I want to share with you a couple of examples of ironic ways change happened in my life and my client’s life. I hope that this episode will inspire you and show you that you don’t need to spend a lot of time and energy focusing on fighting your eating disorder to feel better.

[Client chat] Therapy vs Coaching for binge eating
Listen to how Ruby's life has changed since we started coaching together a few months ago. Including how she stopped binge eating and became more intuitive with food. Ruby also talks about what contributed to her eating disorder, how binge eating impacted her life, and her short experience with therapy where she felt like the therapist's advice was quite triggering and unhelpful.
Enjoy!

Binge eating vs overeating
“Is overeating the same as binge eating?" Not really. Eating too much pizza on a Friday night doesn't mean you have Binge Eating Disorder. Most of us overeat on occasion, such as during the holidays, but frequent and compulsive overeating may be a sign of binge eating disorder.
Join me this week and discover the difference between binge eating and overeating and how binge eaters differ from overeaters by asking yourself the 6 questions from today’s episode.

Self-love vs SELF-LOVE
I lived a lot of my life hating myself and believing that I’m broken. When I entered the world of self-development I thought that I finally started to love myself. However, saving uplifting quotes on Pinterest and preaching about superficial forms of self-love was just a façade. My self-love was very fragile and fell into pieces when I experienced depression and binge eating relapse. The self-help industry made me believe that I’m not good enough. You can't hate your way into loving yourself. Now my relationship with myself is deeper than it ever was. It’s clearer to me now that there is a difference between loving yourself and LOVING YOURSELF. Join me this week as I share my journey from self-hatred to self-love.

ADHD-friendly tips for binge eating
For many people with ADHD, listening to hunger/fullness cues is especially hard, because many ADHD medications suppress appetite. There is also a deeper biological drive for the ADHD brain to seek dopamine, therefore many ADHDers have a tendency to use food as a way to deal with boredom, stress, and other intense emotions. Those with ADHD may be particularly likely to have trouble planning (executive function deficits) and eating consistently throughout the day which in consequence may lead to binging at night.
I want to support all neurodivergents in healing their relationship with food so in today’s episode I provide you with some practical tips on how to navigate binge eating recovery with ADHD. Suggested solutions apply not only to binge eating but also overeating episodes.

Do you have to give up weight loss forever?
A desire for weight loss and an endless dieting cycle can make the binge eating episodes stronger and more intense. Working on weight loss is counterproductive to binge eating recovery. However, is it possible to pursue weight loss goals once all disordered eating behaviors subsided and stabilized? That’s the question I’m going to answer in today’s episode. In addition, I’ll share with you my general beliefs about weight loss and the possibility of losing weight during the active phase of binge eating recovery. Since this episode is devoted to weight loss I also discussed the set point theory, which postulates that everyone’s body is preset by biological and genetic factors to stay within the set point weight range. However, recently set point theory has been questioned, undoubtedly it has some flaws so researchers came up with alternative theories of how body weight is regulated in humans. One of those alternative theories is called the settling point model which I quickly discuss at the end of the episode. Enjoy!

Binge eating and weight loss
Did you know that humans are hardwired for feast and famine cycles? Dieting is a type of self-imposed starvation and our body is programmed to fight against it. There is always a dynamic balance in nature, so naturally, after a period of starvation, your body wants to restore homeostasis by increasing your appetite. It’s important for all people struggling with binge eating to understand that binge eating isn’t a result of their lack of self-discipline or willpower but rather the body’s attempt to survive a period of time when food is restricted. In today’s episode, I’m going to answer the question of why you need to stop trying to lose weight if you struggle with binge eating.

Urge surfing
Follow this step-by-step guide shared in today’s episode to learn how to allow urges to binge without reacting to them. Urge surfing is a mindfulness-based strategy that involves observing and accepting an urge without feeding or fighting it. It involves noticing the sensations and imagining cravings to be like waves. They gradually build intensity, peak, and then they fade away. By practicing urge surfing you can learn to ride out urges to binge without giving in to them.

But I’m binging on healthy foods
Have you ever binged on healthy foods? I know I did. Mainly on energy-dense foods like dates, bananas, nuts, sweet potatoes, but also on huge salads full of vegetables! I was a volume eater. In a way, binge eating is just a habit. Triggers (thoughts, feelings, interactions, etc.) can evoke in you an urge to binge. You feel a need to stuff your face with food, doesn’t matter what type of food. If you find chocolate banana smoothie comforting, you may binge on this type of healthy food. Let me tell you, clean eating did not save my relationship with food and I don’t think that filling up on salads will stop you from binge eating. Listen in this week as I show you that binging on healthy foods is still binging.

Why you shouldn’t compensate for food with exercise.

Spock vs Homer in your brain
Do you make rational food decisions or are you a slave to cravings and urges?
Reaching for extra food when you’re not really hungry is a type of self-sabotaging behaviour that prevents you from reaching your wellness goals. You end up overeating when your inner Homer Simpson takes over Mr. Spock.
The good news is that you can overcome urges coming from your primitive brain and use a rational brain to make better food decisions.
