How To Ask Better Questions To Increase Your Insight & Impact With Your Leader

It's a solo episode from Liz. All about improving how we ask questions, especially when it comes to asking questions of the person or people we support. This month, we're focusing on enhancing our skills in managing up and engaging effectively with leaders. It's what I describe as the 'Leader Insight & Impact Zone'.   Why Questions Matter - Asking the right questions is crucial for understanding and growth. Many of us hesitate to ask questions due to fear of looking incompetent or being annoying, but it's essential to overcome these fears.   Key Insights - Reconnect with Curiosity: Let's embrace our natural curiosity and not be afraid to ask questions. - Types of Questions: I discuss four main types: elevating, funneling, adjoining, and clarifying questions. Each serves a different purpose in helping us understand and connect better. - Practical Tips: Use open-ended questions, balance them with closed questions when needed, appreciate the power of silence, and practice active listening.   Highlights - The Importance of Questions: They help unlock new knowledge and increase understanding. - Overcoming Fear: I encourage everyone to see questioning as an opportunity for learning, not something to be scared of.   Resources - Episode 48: How To Interview Your Boss To Clarify Expectations & Perceptions   Conclusion - Asking questions is a skill that can greatly improve our interactions and our work. It shows curiosity, vulnerability, and can lead to better outcomes.   Connect With Me: - Share your thoughts and takeaways from this episode on our social media platforms. - Join our community of Lovely Loyal Listeners (LLLs) by hitting follow/subscribe and be part of our journey in 2024! Interview With Amy Crumley (Part Two)

Amy Crumley learned the intricacies and nuances of the Executive Support profession from her mother and grandmother, who rendered their support to high-level executives in Atlanta, Georgia, and Denver, Colorado in the United States. Amy's own career path has followed a diversified route, traversing the foundation of owning a cabinet company, owning a staffing company, traveling around Europe, and teaching English as a second language. In part two of our interview, listen to Amy explain her approach to being not just efficient but effective as an Executive Assistant supporting the C-Suite leaders at Samba TV. Interview with Dr. Kirstin Ferguson AM - The Art of Modern Leadership

In this episode of Assist With Impact, Liz’s guest is Dr. Kirstin Ferguson AM an author, columnist and company director. Liz talks with Kirstin about her experience navigating the career ‘climbing frame’ and her latest book, Head & Heart: The Art of Modern Leadership. Kirstin shares some pivotal moments in her career, including when she was debating whether to become a journalist or join the military after leaving school. She ultimately chose the military, but her love for writing and journalism remained. She shares that she often suffers from imposter syndrome, but has learned to say yes anyway and trust herself. Listen to the podcast to hear Kirstin discuss what readers can expect from Head & Heart: The Art of Modern Leadership and why it is different to the many other leadership books that  have been published. Kirstin explains that the book is unlike any other book on leadership because it combines her own research and experience with interviews of a diverse range of people, not just corporate leaders. She also talks about the importance of an Australian view on what it means to be a modern leader and how the book covers a mix of theories and research behind leadership. The Head & Heart Leader Scale™ is a tool developed by Kirstin Ferguson with Lisa Bradley at the QUT Business School to assess leaders' ability to integrate emotional intelligence with their professional skills. The scale is based on the concept that leadership involves not only technical competencies, but also a range of emotional intelligence skills, including empathy, self-awareness, and social skills.  The scale consists of 24 questions that assess a leader's ability to lead with both their head and their heart, with each question assessing a different aspect of leadership. The aim of the scale is to help leaders identify areas where they can improve and develop their emotional intelligence skills to become more effective leaders. Kirstin and Liz discuss the results of Liz’s Head & Heart Leader Scale Survey and how the results should be interpreted. Throughout the interview, Liz and Kirstin discuss the various ways Kirstin has advocated for women, including her viral social media campaign called #CelebratingWomen and how Administrative professionals can and do lead from within, and we discuss the contribution of Kirstin’s own Chief of Staff Luisa. Why You Don't Need To Be More Than 'Just' An Assistant

There seems to be a real push on for assistants to aspire to more.    Even the term 'assistant' is apparently uncool!   On the one hand, you're being told that you're more than 'just an assistant' and then seeing programs that promote you to aim to be more than just an assistant.   I don't know about you, but I'm confused.   In this solo episode I share my perspective on the realities of the assistant career. What it looks like to be an assistant for a 'reason, a season or a lifetime' and why no one path is right for everyone.   I also share why I believe that:   - You are valuable and of value as an assistant   - You can expand the boundaries of your role as an assistant    - You are not your job and you are not tied to the manager or leader you support       And why I encourage you to:   - Get clear on your value   - Get clear on your values   - Build your confidence and your competence The Boston Consulting Group I reference can be found here: https://www.bcg.com/publications/2020/heart-ceo-effectiveness Connect with me on Instagram and LinkedIn and make sure you're subscribed to my newsletter to be the first to hear when my exciting new program launches.

Mastering the 3 Ps: A Framework for Understanding Your Manager's Needs and Priorities

In this episode, Liz shares a simple yet effective framework for assistants to build and maintain their understanding of their manager's needs and priorities. She talks about how managing different needs and priorities across different executives can cause stress and anxiety and contribute to overwhelm. Liz introduces the 3 Ps - Preferences, Priorities, and Pet Peeves - and explains how they can be used to set up new relationships for success and reset existing relationships. She emphasizes that assistants are not mind readers and need information, insight, and experience to manage their manager's needs and preferences effectively. Liz breaks down each of the three Ps and provides examples of how assistants can gather information about them, including asking their manager directly. Liz also emphasizes the importance of ongoing dialogue and structured approaches to checking in with managers as priorities are constantly changing. She suggests documenting the three Ps for managers and keeping the list handy and updated. Liz highlights the 3 Ps as a dynamic document that can be used as a handover document and shared with other EA colleagues. She encourages assistants to be proactive, curious, and interested in their manager's needs and priorities. Finally, Liz talks about how to put the 3 Ps into practice, emphasizing the importance of using open-ended questions and fostering curiosity for insights. She also mentions that she provides a workbook for coaching clients and training program attendees that guides them through how to set up a 3 Ps conversation with their manager. Interview with Jessica Davies: A Force Multiplier In Action

My interview today is with Jessica Davies. Operations Manager for Dr. Peter Fuda, based in Sydney, Australia. Jess has worked with Peter for over four years now. Commencing in an EA capacity and subsequently moving into the role of Operations Manager early in 2022.  In that capacity, Jess partners with Peter across three key streams; his consultancy; The Alignment Partnership, his leadership app; Enixa and any speaking engagements he undertakes.  In the Operations Manage role, Jess works across account management, project management, marketing and content creation, always with the intention to amplify Peter’s work.  Prior to TAP, Jess worked at a Fintech start-up in London as the EA to the CEO, and has held a number of executive assistant and team assistant roles prior to that. I met Jess Davies when I reached out via LinkedIn to connect with Peter Fuda.   I was immediately impressed with her professionalism and communication skills. In my interactions with Jess, it was clear that Peter placed enormous value and trust in her and this was articulated by him when I interviewed him in Episode 165 of the podcast…if you haven’t listened to that episode…you must go back and take a listen.  Peter described how Jess has the ability to '10x' what he is doing. She is a force multiplier. I had already decided that I wanted to invite Jess to be a guest on the podcast, and that recommendation just cemented it.  It was a delight to speak to someone like Jess who embodies the characteristics of the Linchpin Assistant. In this interview, you will hear how Jess reflects all five levels of the Linchpin Model that I train and teach.  Jess speaks about how the culture Peter has created is one where busyness is not a badge of honour. Instead, effectiveness and creating capacity are capabilities that are encouraged. It was a delight to interview Jess and to hear her describe her curiosity, her thirst for knowledge. In this final episode of the podcast in 2022 it is a delight to bring you an admin professional who  has truly revealed her leadership capabilities and continues to grow and develop. Someone who truly represents the idea that Leadership is not a position; it’s a mindset and a toolset.  Connect with Jess via LinkedIn or they’re welcome to contact me on email: [email protected] – and of course, the best way to access Enixa on a 30 day free trial is via www.enixa.co

Leadership Is Not A Position: Interview with Dr. Peter Fuda

For two decades, Dr. Peter Fuda has been a Sherpa to leaders, teams and organizations across the globe as a consultant, coach, author, researcher, speaker and professor of management. Andy Penn, the former CEO of Telstra (Australia’s pre-eminent telecommunications company has said of Peter “If I can only spend an hour with one person, I choose to spend it with Peter.” Most recently, Peter has been driven by a mission to democratize leadership, via an innovative digital product. It’s called Enixa. I am a huge fan girl of Peter’s having first come across his thought-leadership when I was an EA.   I will also say that as a proud Aussie, it brings me enormous pleasure to be bringing Peter to you, my lovely listeners who are spread across the globe and who more than likely are unfamiliar with his work. It is so wonderful for me to be able to share such a brilliant and innovative leadership expert like Peter with you. As you know, I’m a strong believer that as an assistant you have the ability to lead from where you are and we don’t need to be leaders of people to be leaders and to demonstrate self-leadership. In this wide-ranging discussion you will hear - Peter’s take on this and how leadership is not a position.  - What it means to have influence: How it’s a factor of two vital ingredients. - His observations on the value assistants can bring to their leader and in fact he sings the praises of his own former EA and now Operations Manager, Jessica Davies….and, spoiler alert, in my next episode (#166) you will hear my interview with Jess where we talk about how her role as a Linchpin Assistant supporting Peter. - The ONE resource (aside from Enixa) that Peter feels should be on your reading list It was an honour and privilege to interview Peter and I want to extend my deepest thanks to Jess for facilitating the interview. Peter shared that he turns down 9 out of 10 speaking/media opportunities. The fact that he chose to spend some of his valuable time with me is a wonderful compliment that I do not take lightly. What a way to finish off 2023. Two back-to-back episodes with a brilliant leader and leadership expert and his equally brilliant Linchpin Assistant. Stand-by for Episode 166 in two weeks time! Upping Your Email Effectiveness - Part 2 of 3

My second hack for upping your effectiveness is about the structure of your emails. It’s an approach called BLUF which stands for Bottom Line Up Front A BLUF (bottom line up front) is a framework where the essential information is placed at the beginning of the text, rather than the end. The BLUF framework makes you more credible. You will sound more crisp and confident. That sends a powerful signal that you know your stuff.

Upping Your Email Effectiveness - Part 1 of 3

Welcome to the first of a three-part series designed to help you be more proactive and effective. In this episode I share an approach to crafting email subject lines that have more impact. Effective subject lines clearly communicate the action you expect or want the recipient to take.  It’s effectively cuing the person - saving them time and mental energy as they scan their inbox. This simple approach uses square brackets that show the abbreviated action or keyword. Square brackets stand out visually so the cue will be clearer Implementing this approach requires you to be proactive. Incorporating this approach will require you to discuss with your exec to agreen on the abbreviations are that you’re going to use.

Tapping Into Your Emotional Triggers

While our emotions have evolved to help us, there are times when our emotional responses no longer serve us for a variety of reasons. Unwanted emotional triggers can range from being a minor nuisance, to in some instances, leading us towards behavior we may later regret. I like to say we are human beings, not human doings. Assistants are required to give and receive feedback.  Being able to stay 'above the line' in terms of our thinking and behaviour is a key part of being able to Assist With Impact. Understanding the six triggers that can get in the way of us being able to engage with people in a healthy and productive way is an essential part of knowing yourself. In this episode I share: - six emotional triggers that can be at play in our relationships - how awareness of these triggers can help us avoid an Amygdala Hijack (what happens when emotion takes over and our lizard brain fires up) - why this self awareness is important I hope you enjoy the episode. 142. Stop Being The Victim: Identifying The Villain In Your Drama Triangle

The third and final episode in my mini-series on how the dreaded Drama Triangle plays out for you as an Executive Assistant or Office Professional. In this episode we focus on the 'Perpetrator'. These people are the villain of the drama. They're controlling and they're catch-cry will be something like... "It's all your fault", "I know better", "You're doing it wrong". Setting boundaries and communicating assertively are vital in managing people like this.  Download my free guide to escaping The Drama Triangle here: https://bit.ly/linchpin140 Listen to Episode 113 to hear two strategies for communicating assertively https://myeacareer.com/podcasts/113-power-skills-for-executive-assistants-how-to-handle-a-difficult-conversation/ Read the World Administrator Summit report on bullying here: https://wa-summit.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/worldwide_workplace_bullying_survey_results_2017.pdf Link to YouTube video on Understanding the Drama Triangle vs Prescence from The Conscious Leadership Group - https://youtu.be/ovrVv_RlCMw

140. The Drama Triangle Explained

This week's episode relates to a topic that I see coming up again and again in my work coaching and training executive assistants and administrative professionals. The Drama Triangle is something you will relate to both in terms of your work environment and in your personal life. Are you a victim, a persecutor, or a rescuer? If you're human, chances are there will be different situations where you may view yourself (or be seen by others) as all three.  The Drama Triangle was the work of psychotherapist Stephen Karpman in the 1960s. He developed it as a way to articulate the three dysfunctional roles that operate in any relationship where conflict arises. I've created a free one-page download to help you reflect on the 3 ways you can understand and escape The Drama Triangle.  https://bit.ly/linchpin140 Learn more about The Drama Triangle concept: https://powerofted.com/drama-triangle/ https://youtu.be/ovrVv_RlCMw https://www.forbes.com/sites/drnancydoyle/2020/02/17/avoiding-workplace-drama-4-steps-to-being-an-ally-not-a-rescuer-victim-or-persecutor/?sh=43fd46dca3d1

136. Navigating The Career Spider Frame Case Study

Climbing the career ladder isn't all it's cracked up to be. Instead, think of your career like a spider frame... Yes there's up. But there's also across. This episode is the part of my discussion with Dani and Tricky from Tenfold Australia who I featured in Episode 135. I took the opportunity to get them to tell me about their personal experience navigating the career spider frame. Listen to them as they recount the moves they've made, the lessons they've learned, and the way that Tenfold Australia is now offering them a great vantage point to survey those moves respective pivot points. Hearing about how other professionals navigate their career spider frame will hopefully encourage you to reflect on your own journey and celebrate your own movements.

135. Interview with Dani Matthews & Richard (Tricky) Mableson of Tenfold Australia

Tenfold Australia was established in 2020 to ‘tenfold Australia’s impact for a better world’. They describe themselves as a 21st century multinational leadership forum. The company name reflects their purpose to tenfold Australia’s impact for a better world. Episode 135 is my interview with Dani Matthews, Chief Experience Officer (CXO) and Richard (Tricky) Mableson, Chief Success Officer (CSO) of Tenfold Australia. Commencing operations in 2020, Tenfold Australia provides a range of digital and in-person forums for the Australian based leaders of global companies.  A core component of the forums is a monthly EA 'pod' where the Executive Assistants of the member business leaders meet. Tenfold Australia sees the EA as part of the leadership team and are committed to supporting and enabling their growth through these monthly meetings (virtual and in person). Listen to the episode to hear about what Dani and Tricky  have observed makes an indispensable EA, how to improve your capacity to be a strategic thinker, and how the EAs they interact with at Tenfold Australia have adapted and pivoted to ensure they remain indispensable despite the impact of remote working and reduced travel for their business leaders. https://www.tenfoldaustralia.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/tenfoldaustralia/ https://www.bcg.com/publications/2020/heart-ceo-effectiveness

133. Why Hope Is Not A Strategy

I didn't invent the phrase 'hope is not a strategy' but I love it and I think it's particularly relevant for assistants who find themselves trapped in a hope-based strategy when it comes to asking for what they want and what they need AND asking for what their boss wants and needs. In this episode I explore the topic of self advocacy and how it is one area where being comfortable engaging in difficult conversations is an essential Power Skill that I want you to invest energy in developing. If you'd like to get some practical tips and tactics on how you can engage in difficult conversations with more ease and confidence you want to register for my upcoming masterclass on this hot topic for assistants.  Register here: http://bit.ly/linchpinskills1 This webinar will be held live on April 29th @ 12 midday AEST and the link to the recording emailed following the event to those who have registered.

132. Engaging In Difficult Conversations: The Power Skills Most Assistants Struggle With

No one likes a difficult conversation (including me). Being able to engage in challenging conversations is a crucial Power Skill that I train assistants in. There are many people who avoid them altogether but the consequences of this can be enormous and it's definitely something that will get in the way of you being perceived as a Linchpin Assistant. If you're someone who cares about creating and maintaining healthy and happy relationships, both at work as well as in your personal life, you know that sometimes an uncomfortable conversation is necessary.   In a recent speaking engagement I asked assistants for the one Power Skill they struggle with the most....and engaging in difficult conversations was overwhelmingly nominated as a problem area. So in this episode I share: Three questions to ask yourself before a tough conversation Four behaviours that are most likely to escalate conflict One DO and One don’t to keep front of mind Two frameworks or scaffolds for structuring a difficult conversation One final tactic for avoiding misunderstandings or miscommunication Resources discussed in this episode: Georgia Murch can be found here: https://georgiamurch.com/blogs/ Listen to Episode 113 and 55 for more tools and tactics to help you engage in difficult conversations and power up this Power Skill. https://myeacareer.com/podcasts/113-power-skills-for-executive-assistants-how-to-handle-a-difficult-conversation/ https://myeacareer.com/podcasts/how-to-approach-difficult-conversations-steps-for-executive-assistants/ Join the waitlist for the Empowered Assistant's Academy here: http://bit.ly/eaacademywaitlist

131. Taking The Temperature Of C-Suite Leaders: Insights From My Survey

A few years back I started surveying business leaders to get their perspective on the role of the EA and how their EA enabled their leadership and effectiveness. The results continue to be interesting. In this episode I share a couple of the insights. Interestingly whilst leaders SAY they want their EA to demonstrate leadership traits, significantly less respondents agreed with statements that bear out what it LOOKS like for an assistant to be treated as part of the leadership team. This disconnect is something I know many of you will not be surprised by. To share this survey with your business leader go to: https://lizvanvliet.typeform.com/to/aLOWjz I would love to get more responses to add to my research. The survey incorporates ideas from Adam Fidler's EA Manifesto which you can read here: https://adamfidler.academy/blog/2017/6/21/the-ea-manifesto-what-i-am I interviewed Adam for the podcast back in 2017 (Episode 26 and Episode 27) In today's episode I also mentioned the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, Managing Up by Mary Abbajay and Attention Management by Maura Thomas.

129. Reflecting & Refocusing: It's Not Too Late

It might be February but it's still early enough in 2021 to spend some time reflecting and refocusing so that you can march forward purposefully into this still fresh year. In this episode Liz shares some resources to help you do exactly that. Firstly, Dr. Peter Fuda is a thought leader in the area of high performing teams and leadership. He has a brilliant blog and is someone to follow on LinkedIn. Find him at:  https://www.enixa.co/ Liz also mentions the concept of S.M.A.A.R.T. goals (as opposed to just S.M.A.R.T.) The extra 'A' stands for Action-Oriented and this idea was one she picked up from listening to Michael Hyatt in Episode #66 – What SMART Goals Get Wrong. You can find it on Apple Podcasts here: Finally, Liz mentions Pat Lencioni and his encouragement to be 'Hungry, Humble and Smart' as an employee. If there's a takeaway from this episode it's that we need to be as kind to ourselves as we are to others. Life is messy and as I like to say, we are human beings not human doings and the realities of 'being a human' have been what I've experienced in the last few weeks. Onwards and upwards. 124. Why Attention Management Is An Indispensable Skill For Linchpin Assistants

In this episode Liz explains what Attention Management is and how it differs from Time Management and some tools and techniques for being proactive about managing your attention. There is a school of thought that Time Management is an outdated concept. Instead it’s about Attention Management - switching your attention to focusing on achieving a specific result. Maura Thomas defines it as  “...the ability to consciously direct your attention in any given moment, to be more proactive than reactive, and to maintain control rather than inadvertently relinquish it. It’s about regaining control over your attention and thereby taking control of your life. Attention management empowers your productivity.” Links to resources discussed: https://maurathomas.com/ Maura Thomas - Ted Talk https://youtu.be/Yzp5ZJJOXNc https://www.atlassian.com/blog/productivity/attention-management-for-teams

119. Why It's Okay To Love Yourself More Than Your Job

A solo episode discussing why it's so vital that regardless of how much you love you job you must always prioritise your love for yourself above it.  That can be tricky when you're anxious and stressed about your job security but helping you see that you have options is what I'm all about. Self care anytime is important because we are human beings NOT human doings but in 2020 it's gone beyond burnout for most of us and we are now just soldiering on despite our mental fatigue and sense of overwhelm.  There is no magic bullet but what we can do is introduce small changes that will help you fire up your own inner flame.  Article mentioned in the show can be found here: https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/11269-rekindle-love-of-work.html

118. Less Ladder More Spider Frame

A solo episode ruminating on my own experience thinking of my career as a ladder and struggling at times to feel that I had options and that there were benefits to gain from making a lateral, diagonal or even a backwards move. These days I prefer to think of my career as climbing a spider frame that you'd find in a playground. Up, down, lateral and diagonal moves are all not just possible but encouraged.  Embracing the mindset that every move affords you opportunities to learn and grow and that there is a view to be had from each spot on that frame....not just the top! 113. Power Skills for Executive Assistants: How To Handle A Difficult Conversation

A common problem for EAs (and in fact common to most of us) is struggling to communicate effectively in crunch moments. When it comes to tackling a tricky situation that requires you to speak up, how many times do you find yourself -Avoiding the issue hoping it will go away? -Having the difficult conversation and then it getting out of hand? Episodes where I’ve discussed tackling uncomfortable conversations include: #55 How To Approach Difficult Conversations - Steps for Executive Assistants #18 Why Executive Assistants Need To Get Comfortable With Uncomfortable Conversations #85 POWER Skills for Indispensable Assistants: Communication Skills In this episode I share two strategies you can use to PLAN your approach to tricky conversations. 112. Your Value Star: How Defining Our Virtues Empowers Executive Assistants

I came up with the concept of My Value Star™ when I was post breast cancer, struggling with a lack of confidence and self belief. In Chapter 11 of my book “Coming Home from Breastcancerville" I talk about my 'career wilderness years' after having children and how I lost touch with what made me invaluable as an employee. Somehow it took hitting rock bottom due to breast cancer treatment and recovery for me to look at myself differently. Despite feeling lost and unsure of anything I doodled this five-pointed star and identified five qualities that spoke to my value. That five-pointed star was the first step in me reinventing myself and rebuilding my confidence and self belief. In this episode I share how My Value Star came about, why I encourage you to spend some time reflecting on your own virtues and I have created a free workbook to help step you through this process. You can find the free workbook here: https://bit.ly/yourvaluestar In this episode I also mention a free webinar I am running on Wednesday 2nd September at midday (AEST). 110. Getting Clear On How Your Output As An Executive Assistant Generates Business Outcomes

Is your self-worth as an Executive Assistant driven by activity or output?  An output is something you do. An outcome is something that happens as a consequence of something that you do. This episode came about because so many EAs I have been training and coaching are struggling with the feeling that because they're not 'seen' working remotely they are not feeling as sure about the value they're delivering. EAs may not generate outcomes as a general rule but their output does. Getting clear on the connection between outputs and the outcome they're tied to is a valuable way of building confidence and self-worth but also articulating your value to your manager. 104. Three Ways Executive Assistants Can Build Respect

I prescribe to the view that respect cannot be demanded, it must be earned. Thinking that you "deserve" respect is a path to unhappiness and frustration. Instead, I recommend taking a proactive approach to earning respect that is based on the elements of my Knowing Assistant Framework: - Knowing yourself - Knowing your Power Skills - Knowing your job - Knowing your boss - Knowing your organisation You can read more about the Knowing Assistant Framework on my website myeacareer.com In this episode I share 3 strategies for building respect that I've read about in a brilliant book by Peggy Vasquez "Not Just An Admin". 103. From Frazzled To Flow: How Executive Assistants Can Identify What's Happening When You're In 'Overwhelm'

Executive Assistants that I coach and mentor struggle with the feeling of not being in control. What I find is that it's not just a case of 'too much work' or 'not enough support'. When we feel overwhelmed or frazzled there are both internal and external factors at work.  So I've created a workbook that steps you through identifying the inner and outer elements that are in play when you feel like you're really kicking goals (and when you're not). 92. Road Rambling: Roaring Into 2020 In Your Own Unique Way

Welcome to 2020. In this road rambling* episode Liz explores how social media can leave us feeling overwhelmed amidst the onslaught of posts telling us that we need to have big plans and big ideas and if not, there's courses we can sign up for and people to show us how to get ourselves sorted.....but we don't need to jump on this bandwagon. Instead, we can set realistic expectations for how we might proceed in 2020 without setting ourselves up for any FOMO or letting comparison be the thief of joy. The reality is that for many Executive Assistants the pressures that were there when we logged out on Christmas Eve are still there and even worse when we come back after New Year and learning how to navigate this is more valuable to you. So, here's to 2020 and me helping you feel more effective and able to expand your circle of influence.  Oh and there's some rambling about where I'm at and what my priorities are right now and for 2020 (the word family gets mentioned quite a bit). *Road Rambling refers to the way this episode is recorded in the car, on the go so excuse the background engine noise!!!

#89 POWER Skills for Indispensable Assistants - Curiosity

The sixth in a series on POWER Skills for Indispensable Assistants. These are often called 'soft' skills but they are anything but soft.  I believe that you can be functionally competent and you can even be strategically competent and know who’s who in the zoo and understand the intangible power dynamics that operate in all organisations (both competencies are essential in my experience to being truly on your way to being perceived as indispensable). But if you soft skills are lacking or you're simply not investing in constantly developing them then you are missing the vital element that’s going to really allow you step into the space of being a truly indispensable assistant.  Resources discussed in this show: https://hbr.org/2015/12/assessment-whats-your-curiosity-profile https://hbr.org/2018/09/curiosity#the-business-case-for-curiosity Atomic Habits by James Clear Rising Strong by Brene Brown

#85 POWER Skills for Indispensable Assistants: Communication Skills

The first episode in a series of episodes I'm doing on what I call Essential POWER Skills for Indispensable Assistants. Otherwise (and inadequately) described as 'soft' skills, these are the skills that differentiate you from the pack.  You can be functionally competent and great at the bread and butter aspects of your role (essential in my opinion). You can be totally across the strategic implications of things going on in the sphere of your manager and business unit. But if you are not developing and improving your POWER skills you will not be delivering the value and effectiveness that will help to catapult your manager to their next level of effectiveness and capability.  As the enabler of your manager, demonstrating and developing these POWER skills is vital and will position you as an Indispensable Assistant. #76 Indispensable Skills: Future Fit by Andrea Clarke

This episode is a book review focusing on Chapter 4 of Future Fit by Andrea Clarke. I think this is a must-read for you because I believe that what will allow you to adapt and navigate the change that is going to continue to come at you as Executive Assistants  is your 'power skills' or the human skills that Andrea outlines in the book. Functional competence (the stuff you can get done)and even strategic competence (your awareness of what and why stuff is happening in your team and the broader organisation) are not sufficient for Executive Assistants to be perceived as indispensable to their business leader and employers. It's the soft skill proficiency that's going to help you stand out and stand up. What I love about Chapter 4, Tapping Into Adaptability is that whilst Andrea lays out all the reasons why we must be able to adapt to change, she also reminds us to be kind to ourselves. Again, this is so aligned with my own advice to the people I coach and train. We are human beings, no human doings and reminding ourselves of this is a great way to start being kind to ourselves. Connect with Andrea at https://www.careerceo.com.au/ where you can find out more about her work and buy the book.

In this weeks "Being" episode Liz reflects on a comment that was made by a participant in a workshop she ran last week. The workshop was about equipping you with the words that describe the value you bring to your role as an Office Professional...in other words, your brand attributes. An audience member admitted that she found this challenging because it felt like self-promotion. In this episode Liz shares why self-promotion is something that you shouldn't fear and getting over your discomfort is vital for reaching a place where you can be given the affirmation that what you do does matter and it is valuable. That affirmation starts with you being able to talk about the value you bring.

#74 Indispensable Skills: Four Steps To Unhooking Your Emotions At Work

In this episode Liz shares the four step approach outlined by Kathi Elster and Katherine Crowley in their brilliant book "Working With You Is Killing Me" to disconnect yourself from the emotions of difficult situations and confrontations. This technique highlights why Emotional Intelligence as a blanket term actually consists of four parts and self awareness and self management are two that are bought into play in this technique and topic. Resources mentioned in the episode are: https://hbr.org/2017/12/how-to-control-your-emotions-during-a-difficult-conversation Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence

#68 How To Influence Without Authority

The day to day reality for Executive Assistants is that they are required to get stuff done with no formal authority to give them clout with the people that they need to engage in order to get that stuff done. Influencing without authority is what this is called. In this episode Liz outlines the six principles of influence that Dr. Robert Cialdini outlined in his ground breaking book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. Understanding how to adapt all or some of these principles is something that Knowing Assistants invest the time to do. You may never read this book cover to cover but understanding what he means by each of them can help you think about the way you can influence people to move them in the direction you want them to go.  I hope this episode is helpful.

#65 On Being: Getting Up To Speed In 2019

Look I made a rhyme...'getting up to speed in 2019'. Today's episode is a long time coming. I've been on a hiatus from the podcast due to family 'stuff'. I'm excited to be back though and hope at least some listeners have hung around long enough to see this episode drop into their podcatcher! Yes, it might be February but in our house January was all about being present and available over the school holidays so although my happy new year might be a bit late the sentiment is still there. HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and yours and I hope the coming year brings you many good things personally and professionally. In this episode I share what I've been up to on the family front that's got in the way of podcasting and I share my plans for a content rich 2019 for my wonderful community of listeners. Thanks for putting me in your ears and I look forward to providing you with insight and information during 2019. #64 Indispensable Skills - Managing Your Manager

In this episode Liz takes you through a play by play from one of her recent coaching engagements. In this situation the Executive Assistant was literally days away from resigning from her role. The communication with her manager was in such a bad state and her morale was so low that she felt quite hopeless. As a result of implementing the advice Liz gave her in their coaching sessions she was able to turn around the situation and establish a new framework for communication that has allowed the relationship to go from strength to strength. The downside of coaching Executive Assistants is that the situations and circumstances are highly confidential so unfortunately the particular assistant cannot participate in this interview. However, you can rest assured that every step outlined in this episode occurred and the results are as reported. Outstanding for the EA and for the manager. #62 Being Indispensable - What Is It That Makes You Indispensable As An Executive Assistant

Melba Duncan says the value of an EA or Administrative Assistant is managing things your boss doesn't even know you're doing. But if they don't know you're doing these things then how can you be valued for them and how can you be paid and promoted for doing them. My advice is to get clear on what those things are, those things that make up the part of your iceberg that is below the surface and use this knowledge to create your brand value statement and build out your case for making sure you get that next pay rise!  To register your interest in my upcoming Indispensable You online course, visit http://bit.ly/indispensableme

#59 Saying Yes In Order To Say No - Indispensable tips for Executive Assistants

Today's episode is sharing two tips from a recent keynote presentation I did in Sydney for Office Professionals Day.  Firstly, how thinking like a Sales Person can help you shift your minset... - It’s not their responsibility to buy, it’s your responsibility to sell - You may not want to sell but you that’s what you’re doing - You need to to sell your ideas, your requests, your issues, yourself! How if you can adopt this mindset and channel your inner sales person you will be more effective My advice is to sell what you can sell, make peace with what you can’t Secondly, try saying YES in order to say no! Your sole purpose is to support your manager or managers. Sometimes they will come to your desk when you are busy handling something already assigned and it’s easy to feel you are being interrupted. Yes. You are. But that is your job. Never underestimate the power of “yes” in your thoughts, attitudes and the first word you speak to others. Helps you be perceived as a positive, can-do person. Tip = when someone approaches and interrupts you internally smile and think “yes”. The internal “yes” changes our thought patterns, attitudes, ‘tell’ facial expressions and posture. It’s an old sales technique - never respond with a ‘no’. Instead if something is asked of you say something like “Let’s discuss what I can do” or “Yes, I would love to do that. Here’s what I can do”.

#58 About Being: I've Written A Book!

Super excited to announce that I have a book coming out later this year. Yes, I will be able to officially call myself an author!!! With a working title 'Getting Home From Breast Cancerville (is the hardest bit)' my book is about the complexity and uncertainty of recovering from treatment and accepting that life will never be as it was before Breast Cancer. In writing my own story I have tried to convey the way everyone thinks that when your treatment ends, the worst is behind you. The truth is, the hardest bit is yet to come. If you have Breast Cancer, I have tried to show you what you need to be prepared for once your treatment ends. If you're supporting a friend with Breast Cancer, I try to show you where they will need your greatest support.  If you would like to stay updated on the release date and where to buy it, I've created a link for you to sign up to the mailing list. Click here http://eepurl.com/ds2Z85 It's a book that's taken me four years to write because there's been times where delving into the material has been just too hard. But it's done! My manuscript is now finished and with an editor to whip it into shape. I know there will be more work but it's on it's way to publication.

#57 Five Tips To Help Executive Assistants Manage Up

This week’s episode is my five starter tips for approaching the topic of Managing Up. Managing Up can also be described as managing by influence. It’s a topic that goes right to the heart of what it means to be effective as an Exec Assistant and it’s one of the biggest challenges that assistants grapple with when they’re building a relationship with their manager. It begins with coming at your manager with a sense of curiosity. I love the quote “Seek first to understand”, it’s the heading of Chapter Five in Stephen Covey’s book “The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People” The better you understand your manager, the easier your life will be, and the more successful you will be Tip #1 - Understand their priorities Tip #2 - Keep these priorities front of mind and link back to them when you’re communicating with them Tip #3 - Be genuinely committed to helping your boss be the best version of themselves Tip #4 - Take things away from them that make sense Tip #5 - Pick your moment #48 ‘How to interview your boss to clarify expectations and perceptions’ Read my LinkedIn article on asking better questions https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/five-ways-ask-better-questions-liz-van-vliet/ If you are Sydney based I’d love to see you at the AIOP event celebrating Office Professionals Day on May 4th. #53 Being Indispensable - The 10 Skills You'll Need By 2020 (And Beyond)

#52 Changing It Up For 2018

As some wise person once said, a change is as good as a holiday. Well I've had a holiday and am finally getting back to work so it's now time for some changes.  I'm starting a new format for the show commencing with my next episode #53. I'm a strong believer that you can't 'show up' at work or in life if you're not taking care of your wellBEING. I'm also a huge exponent of the thinking that we are 'human beings not human doings' as Wayne Dyer so eloquently put it. This has been an area of huge significance for me in the years post my Breast Cancer diagnosis and treatment and I feel that it's been a strong theme in the podcast episodes and talks I've done since launching Being Indispensable in mid 2016.  My belief that being perceived as indispensable or a linchpin employee as Seth Godin describes it needs to be driven by three things: Knowing yourself - what are your strengths and weaknesses, what do you need to work on improving to be perceived as a linchpin as well as what you need to be a human being. What is working for you at any given time in the area of your wellbeing and what isn't...and what do you need to do about it! Knowing your boss - what drives them, what are their values and beliefs and what are their priorities. How can you better assist them, add value to them and really be perceived as a strategic partner.  Knowing your organisation - do you really understand what the company or business you work for is all about. Where have they come from and where are they going.  So going forward I will be producing episodes based on these two aspects of us as working people - human beings and aspiring linchpins. I will alternate between a 'BEING' related episode and an 'INDISPENSABLE' related episode.  I look forward to having you along for the ride.

#50 Celebrating An Important Milestone - A Road Rambling Episode

#49 - Why Negotiating Is A Process Not Just A Conversation

Today's episode is a road rambling sharing some of the points I presented to an audience of Executive Assistants at a conference in Sydney run by Intrepid Minds. The topic was negotiating skills and strategies.  It's common for people to think about negotiation as it applies to the job hunt process. Negotiating salary and benefits or alternatively negotiating salary increases or role changes with your employer.  We also negotiate with co workers and peers about the distribution of tasks, due dates, deadlines, needing something from someone else so we can get something done…this takes communication skills and an ability to negotiate and engage in crucial conversations. In this episode I share the thinking and research of Margaret Neale from Stanford University who encourages us to think about negotiation as a process and that the goal is not to get a deal, it's to get a good deal.  Four steps to achieving a successful negotiation: Assess - is it worth it Prepare - know yourself, know the other person Ask - engage Package - start with the results/benefits you can deliver Take a communal approach - works better for women I also share some other tips including not thinking of negotiating as a one-discussion or one-conversation exercise. It may take multiple conversations to get a good deal or the best outcome and you need to stay in dialogue with the other party.  The use of silence and leaving space for the other party to fill is something I've shared before and it's useful when negotiating to be aware of the power of silence. Finally I discuss the concept of BATNA or your best alternative to a negotiated agreement. In other words what is your fall back position, your next best outcome? Hope you enjoy the episode. #48 - How To Interview Your Boss To Clarify Expectations & Perceptions

A key area for festering mistrust and misunderstanding between Executive Assistants and their manager is around expectations and perceptions. Failing to communicate on these topics leads to frustration on the part of both of you. It may be hard for you to broach this subject and it may be equally hard for your boss to give you honest feedback but it is something both of you need to approach with a growth mindset. This initiative falls under the broader topic of 'Know Your Boss' which Liz will be exploring in further episodes.

#45 - Reminding Yourself That You're A Kickass Assistant

#40 The Executive Assistant As Brand Ambassador - Conversations at Nvidia

Episode #40 of Being Indispensable shines a light on two Executive Assistants (or Administrative Assistants as they are known in the USA) who work at Nvidia in Santa Clara, California. The company description on Wikipedia summarises them as follows: Nvidia Corporation is an American technology company based in Santa Clara, California. It designs graphics processing units for the gaming and professional markets, as well as system on a chip units for the mobile computing and automotive market. In simple language, they have designed a really fast chip that until recently was well know amongst gamers because of it's speed. With the increasing requirement for faster processing in enterprise computing as well as the wave of Artificial Intelligence that is building, they are gaining interest and attention for the potential the chips have in these areas. In the same way as we used to think of "Intel Inside" for personal computing, it's now becoming "Nvidia Inside" in the enterprise space. Carla Dutra and Cid Dias are two of many Administrative Assistants at Nvidia. They kindly agreed to speak to me during their lunch hour and in the interviews they share how they came to Nvidia, who they support and some of the reality of their day to day role.  The gold in these conversations is that Carla and Cid epitomise the concept of the EA or AA as brand ambassador. Their genuine enthusiasm for their role and the organisation, their warmth and generosity made a wonderful impression on me and this typifies how they show up in their roles. This is one of the values that Executive Assistants bring to their organisation. They are often the first impression of the company and the interaction they have with people has the power to make or break a person's perception of their company. All credit goes to these two ladies for the way they conduct themselves and for demonstrating this essential trait of indispensable assistants.  For more information on the Executive Assistant as ambassador read this post from Office Dynamics website. Carla and Cid are both on LinkedIn.

#39 Road Ramble - There's No 'Harm' In Being Kind

One thing I find really unfortunate about the realm of Executive Assistant forums is the way there seems to be a tacit acceptance that it's okay to judge each other. As someone who has come to focus on this profession having experienced the world of Selling professionals and Marketing professionals it's something I find quite curious. I've noticed that it seems normal for experts in the profession to jump on their soap box and tell EA's how they should and shouldn't behave.  In this weeks minisode, I ruminate on why it's important to consider that we can never really know what is going on for other people and how being kind should be the first response, no matter how hard that might be at times.

#38 How To Stay Calm Under Pressure

Staying calm under pressure is an important skill for Indispensable assistants to focus on. In Episode 38 Liz shares what it means to be unflappable, why it matters and three techniques to focus on that will help you project an aura of calm when in reality you might be feeling anything but.  Appearing to be unflappable requires us to control our primitive responses to stress and be less reactive. Having these three techniques in your kit bag will empower you to have control over your body language, your voice and your own internal responses to stressful situations. #37 The What's In It For Me Question - Helping Your Executive Get Socially Savvy (Part 4)

Episode 37 is the final episode in my miniseries devoted to helping you get your C-suite leader on the social media bandwagon. In this episode I discuss the elephant in the room - the fact that becoming your executives social media manager involves taking on additional workload which no doubt is the last thing you need as an Executive Assistant. This fact hasn't escaped me and I'm loathe to be the cause of my listeners having something else to stress about. That being said, helping your executive get more engaged on LinkedIn is something that makes sense for a number of reasons (as I've discussed in Episode #34). In this final episode I attempt to help you get a handle on the benefits for you personally...because much as I love to help you position yourself as proactive and strategic (and of course be seen as an essential element in your bosses life), the reality is that there's got to be some sort of WIFM factor for you.  Hope you enjoy this final episode. Next week I promise not to even utter the words "LinkedIn" or "Social". Please visit www.beingindispensable.com/episodes to find the link to the spreadsheet template discussed in the episode. #36 LinkedIn Monitoring Using The Rule Of Five - Tactics For Executive Assistants

Part 3 of my series on how to help your C-Suite leader engage in social media, specifically LinkedIn. In this episode I outline a 5 step process of monitoring and observing the engagement of a targeted number of individuals and companies on LinkedIn. This data will inform the future planning for tactical engagement on LinkedIn.  By tracking these identified individuals and companies over a finite period of time, Executive Assistants will be building their own knowledge of the world their manager operates in as well as collecting information that will be invaluable in helping progress the conversation around how the executive can and should be actively engaging on LinkedIn. This is classic 'red box' activity for Executive Assistants. It's all about thinking strategically and being proactive in support of your C-Suite leader. #34 Why You Need To Help Your Executive Harness Their Social Profile

Episode 34 of Being Indispensable is the first of two episodes that focus on the way engaging in social media can be a great way of demonstrating how proactive, strategic and indispensable they can be. In the first episode Liz explains the benefits that Executives can gain if they harness the power of social media. The idea for these two episodes came from a post on LinkedIn written by Liz. People now spend more time using social media than they do watching television and social media engagement is a top priority for most organisations today. Getting your Executive to understand why they need to make social media engagement a priority is something that is top of mind for indispensable assistants. In Episode 34 it’s all about the WHY. Episode 35 will discuss the HOW with advice and practical tips to help put in place systems and processes that will enable Executives to start moving towards regular and consistent social media engagement. #28 Create A Great Elevator Pitch That Describes Your Business Leader

This week's solo episode is all about passion. Indispensable Executive Assistants demonstrate passion. They are passionate about their role, about their organisation and about the executive they support. It sets them apart from mediocre EA’s and it’s something that may require a mindset shift. One of the ways that you can demonstrate passion is being able to passionately articulate your business leaders’ raison d’etre, their reason for being. This is effectively an ‘elevator pitch’, something that entrepreneurs and salespeople are well known for having. It’s a way of demonstrating that you are operating in that managerial mindset that Adam Fidler talks about. One way of doing this is to use a modified version of Daniel Priestley's SOCIAL PITCH: “Name, Same, Claim to fame, Goal to Game” NAME - You and your position, name and your company name SAME - What are you the same as, industry category (what would I google if I was trying to find you) CLAIM TO FAME - something that makes your boss interesting to work for.  It’s talking to why they are an interesting person to work for and demonstrating that GOAL TO GAME - What's the short to goal that your boss is currently pursuing, what the big picture objective that they are working towards.  Can you put words around the GOAL TO GAME section? If not, you need to take steps to actually understand what you executive’s reason for being is. Another opportunity to initiate a conversation with them, to show them that you are a red box thinker and that you are thinking in that managerial mindset.  Should be able to get this out in around 30 seconds. Will need to practice it, fine tune it. Key Person of Influence by Daniel Priestley

#27 Why You Need To Control Your EA Destiny - Interview With Adam Fidler (Part 2)

In Part 2 of my interview Liz shares some initial results from her Survey of C-Suite Executives where she has been investigating how elements of Adam's EA Manifesto resonate with executives and their experience working with EA's. The results to do date reinforce that assistant's currently are not generally viewed as behaving strategically and operating with the 'managerial mindset' that Adam encourages. However, the results of the survey clearly show that executives want their EA's to demonstrate leadership traits.  Adam also shares a simple mindset hack to remind EA's to think as a manager and he also discusses how it is up to EA's to help their boss see them in a different light, as more 'Red Box' than 'Black box'. Links to Connect with Adam and read about his thinking around the EA role: PA Life Interview Connect with Adam Fidler on LinkedIn Adam Fidler Academy website Adam Fidler’s “What I am” EA manifesto A clip of Sophie Ellis-Bextor “Murder On The Dancefloor” is also included in this episode because it's fun and as discussed Liz loves Adam's dance floor metaphor for encouraging EA's to get out of the weeds!

#26 Why You Need To Control Your EA Destiny - Interview With Adam Fidler (Part 1)

In my interview with Adam we discuss his belief that Executive Assistants must take charge of their professional destiny because if they fail to do so, they risk others stepping in to influence it that do not understand the role and the true value that Executive Assistants can offer organisations and individual leaders. The overarching theme of Adam’s work is about encouraging and enabling EA’s to align their behaviours with what is expected of a mid level manager and the sorts of EQ skills that are focused on in leadership development. He has a higher vision for the role which he articulates in his EA manifesto but rather than this vision being some sort of airy fairy, non-specific ideal he advocates for it being based on a proven foundation of skills development.   I’m already calling out that I’m going to have Adam back on the podcast for us to debate the word ‘indispensable’ as you will hear that he’s not a fan of it. I actually think he and I are in agreement and that it’s about not striving for something you can never achieve, because as we’ve discussed, we’re all dispensable. Anyway…   Top takeaways from interview with Adam   Credibility is achieved through getting the job done, being professional and being qualified - therefore EA’s need to choose high calibre events to attend that will reflect well on them and be seen as an effective use of their time. Focus on what you need to do to be seen as more ‘managerial’, more professional in your role. That means looking closely at what activities and tasks you are spending your time on and look at identifying how you can develop into more red box activities. Aligned with this is spending time in ‘boss mode’ as opposed to ‘pa mode’. Thinking proactively, using initiative, having a growth mindset and asking less for permission and more for confirmation or correction. Boss Mode is about understanding your leaders’ objectives and priorities as well as the organisations and thinking strategically about how you can advance those without being given explicit instruction. This is where Adam’s metaphor of moving up from the dancefloor is so powerful… I love this metaphor, I keep humming Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s song “Murder on the Dancefloor” (link to Youtube clip in the Shownotes for those of you that don’t know it) Finally Adam acknowledges that there will always be a place for black box activities, he says these are the bread and butter tasks of EA’s but the reality is that no one ever got promoted for being great with Excel or Powerpoint. You may need to help your boss see your value in doing ‘red box’ activities but once they’ve experienced the benefits they will be converts. Saving your boss time makes you a huge asset but it requires you to act and work independently.     PA Life Interview Connect with Adam Fidler on LinkedIn Adam Fidler Academy website Sophie Ellis-Bextor “Murder On The Dancefloor” Adam Fidler’s “What I am” EA manifesto

#25 Get Started On Your Personal Skills Audit

Step 1 is to conduct a personal skills audit. In this episode, the first in a five part series to be released over coming weeks, Liz outlines two different approaches to conduct a personal skills audit. Liz also discusses how the results of this exercise will form the basis for Step 3 which is to identify what indispensable looks like to your business leader and how Adam Fidler’s Executive Assistant ‘manifesto’ which he formulated through his coaching and training work with EA’s may serve as a useful conversation starter.  Resources discussed in this episode '5 Steps To Being Indispensable' Factsheet - download on the website www.beingindispensable.com Adam Fidler Executive Assistant role description Vickie Evan’s Tech Savvy Assistant diagrams Tools like MBTI, Strengthfinder and the DISC profile are also valuable to helping you ‘flesh’ out the total picture of what you bring to your role. #24 How You Can Be A Star Without Needing To Be The Star

A solo episode sharing an aha moment that Liz has experienced in the process of developing a new intro for the podcast. It’s a short 15 minute episode this week ruminating on the confidence that comes from realising that in order to be an advocate and influencer in the Executive Assistant space she doesn't need to have been the ‘best’ Executive Assistant that has ever done the role. That it's legitimate and perfectly okay to be passionate about giving a voice to those who are the ‘best’ and that by doing so her role as an influencer of the values and behaviours that make an EA indispensable is valid and useful. #22 Roxanne Calder Interview: How EST10 Is Uncovering The Invisible Ink

As Founder and Managing Director of leading boutique office support recruitment company EST10, Roxanne Calder brings a fresh approach to the table. Roxanne established EST10 in 2010 and from the launch of the company has sought to differentiate EST10 from other recruiters through the way they engage with employers and candidates with integrity and demonstrating through their actions passion and a commitment to finding the very best talent. In fact over 80% of EST10s business comes from referrals and repeat business. I was keen to interview Roxanne because I admire the way EST10 puts their money where their mouth is in the way they support the EA profession through their marketing activities including an annual EA of the year award and their sponsorship of development opportunities for EAs such as the EA Leadership Forum. In addition, EST10 sponsors opportunities for EAs to network and share their experiences at round table events and other organised events. The key takeaways from my discussion with Roxanne include: To become a sought after EA you must possess a high degree of EQ or Emotional Intelligence EA’s at the top of their game demonstrate self control, Their Executives value their trustworthiness and they are seen to have high standards of honesty and integrity. EA’s must take responsibility for their own performance, being willing to ask ‘what can I improve on’ and being self-directed when it comes to their own development. Motivation, empathy and social skills are the other key qualities that define a high level of EQ and these are also vital for an EA that seeks to develop a lasting career in the C-suite. The time that can be saved if the recruitment process involves a conversation, however brief with the Executive. Roxanne sees this as invaluable to ensuring not just that the EA is a good match for the Executive but that the Executive is a good match for the EA. HR is obviously integral to the process but having the Executive engaged early on is going to only enhance the hiring process. I love the fact that Roxanne herself is a successful female entrepreneur and we need to hear more of these stories. EST10 is over six years old and Roxanne herself has had an amazing career, starting out with a Bachelor of Arts, honing her skills in the recruitment industry and creating value now not just through her companies recruitment activities but as a business owner, employing women and developing women in business. She is a very capable and talented businesswomen and I was delighted that she agreed to be interviewed.  https://www.est10.com.au/ https://www.facebook.com/EST10/?fref=ts https://www.instagram.com/est10recruitment/ https://au.linkedin.com/in/roxannecalder

The recent announcement that Atlassian is acquiring Trello is discussed as are a number of alternative tools such as Wunderlist, Asana and Todoist.

#18 Why Executive Assistants Need To Get Comfortable With Uncomfortable Conversations

As Executive/Personal Assistants we are often in the unique position of being aware of 'problems' within our organisation. The mantra "don't bring me problems, bring me solutions" can be counter productive and discourage assistants from engaging in conversations that could be helpful with their business leader.  In this solo episode Liz discusses an article published in Fast Company and compares it with insight from Harvard Business Review that suggests that the 'don't bring me problems' mentality can be unhelpful and discourage conscientious employees to proactively communicate potential problems. Bring problems to your business leaders attention doesn't automatically make you a whiner and Liz outlines one approach that can help you structure such a conversation.

#15 Seth Godin Thinks We Should Be Indispensable Too

Liz shares how the podcast title Being Indispensable was chosen in complete ignorance of the fact that Seth Godin had explored the concept in his book “Linchpin: Are You Indispensable” (which Liz is definitely going to be reading). Even if you subscribe to the view that being indispensable is unattainable, Liz argues that the qualities and behaviors that make someone irreplaceable still hold value and are of value to employers and customers. In the same way, it's become a great way of expressing her value proposition. Liz also explains the reason why there has been a notable absence of new episodes. #1 The "'Why'

Being an Executive Assistant can be isolated and lonely. The relationship with the business leader whilst personal and close requires the assistant to maintain distance from others in order to perform the role well. This makes it hard to share experiences and learnings. In this first episode, Liz outlines why Being Indispensable is the podcast for Executive and Personal Assistants to get the tips, techniques and professional insights that will help make them indispensable. Created by an Executive Assistant, for Executive Assistants to share ideas, experiences, workshop successes and epic fails.
