Animal Party Episode 155 Safety Tips for Hiking Near Wild Animals
Today Deborah breaks down the advice for dealing with different animals you may encounter hiking or camping; wolves, bears, moose, cougars and what to do to prevent disaster. The first best advice is to avoid close encounters Deb shares some very easy ways to do that in today’s show. Did you know that what you do when a bear attacks is totally different from what you should do if a moose charges? Plus, there are safe times and safe places to choose for your adventures and you can learn some very easy to apply tricks for picking the right time and place for hikes and camping.
We all have to pick our battles when it comes to getting along with people and sometimes with our pets too and Deborah has chosen not to battle her dogs over her crock like ‘dawg’ shoes which they repeatedly mistake for dog chew toys! Deborah admits she has made a dog training mistake with Fabio’ the blonde poodle shown here- a mistake she warned her audiences not to make and then went and did it herself; she took pictures and laughed when ‘Fabio’ stole a receipt and now she’ll likely have to ‘pay the price’ with more training to get him to avoid stealing and chewing paper. Wildlife and other dangers like poison are reasons everyone should train their dog to ‘come’ when called and also to ‘drop’ what the dog has in its mouth on command, and ‘leave it’ if told before he grabs the object.

Animal Party Episode 154 What’s Wrong with Dog Breeding in America?
Deb gets Liz Menegon on the show ahead of her interviews with the Washington Post, Forbes and USA Today, to tackle the topic of what’s wrong with dog breeding in America? Did you know that the USDA in charge of regulating food animals is also in charge of the pet industry? Is the AKC doing a good job policing bad apples in the breeding world? Liz says ‘no’. Puppy mills are thriving, and the pups and new owners are suffering. Liz has a new app called HANDS2PAWS that helps people discover what breed best suits their needs and then directs them to the breed clubs with registries of ethical local breeders.
What about mutts? You can use the app to find the breeds that match you and then get a rescue mutt with a combination of those breeds. Deborah explains that when she released her quiz ‘PICK YOUR PUP’ she asked Dr Professor Stan Coren, author of ‘the Intelligence of dogs’ how people could find the right mutt for them; and he confirmed Deborah’s observation that ‘what you see is what you get’ with mutts. If the pup you are considering adopting has floppy ears, webbed paws and likes to fetch you’ve got a mostly retriever for example so the app HANDS2PAWS can be used to find mutts as well as purebreds and lead prospective pet owners to adopt a shelter dog that is their best match.

Animal Party Episode 153 Finding Your Dog Breed Match
Liz Menegon, long time animal advocate has a new free app called HANDS2PAWS which matches families with their perfect dog breed match based on more than just looks! Energy, grooming and needs for mental stimulation plus size and drool and barking are all factored into the algorithm so you end up with a dog that fits your lifestyle and won’t end up in a shelter due to a mismatch. Liz explains that 60% of the dogs surrendered to shelters are there because of breed mismatch or medical conditions buyers didn’t realize.
Many years ago Deborah created a Cosmo style quiz called ‘PICK YOUR PUP’ which helped people find a good dog match for their lifestyle as she realized way back then that mismatch was a huge cause of homeless pets. The Australian shepherds racing the hallways of Liz’s condo, or worse being drugged to fit the condo life, are examples of exercise and mental mismatch that the HANDS2PAWS app will prevent. Have you heard of the ‘horrible hundred’ list of breeders you must avoid? Liz and Deb discuss breeding history, ethics and controls world-wide.

Dusty Rainbolt, Author of ‘Ghost Cats!”( & many others)joins Deborah Wolfe to talk about cat breeds ;smart cats, dumb cats, social cats, noisy cats, cats who are good with kids and the elderly and cats who are not! Dusty and Deb go through many pedigreed breeds and what you can expect for behavioural traits with each one. Persians, Himalayans, Abyssinian, Turkish Van, Ragdoll, Manx, Rex, Siamese and others are contrasted and compared.
Besides the pedigreed breed or combination of breeds you may be dealing with, the nature of that particular animal and the way humans nurtured it as a very young kitten always play a role so please make sure you consider the individual kitten or puppy and its parents when selecting and raise it well for a cat or dog that will be its best and most happy. Deborah asks Liz White to explain how the Animal Protection Party differs from the Green Party, Greenpeace, & PETA. Liz describes a completely different political party that advocates for animals; on farms, being hunted, trapped, fished and for a kinder society. ‘Compassionate politics’ is the term Liz White uses to define the party ethic. What are they actually doing to help animals on the ground? Right now they are working to stop the Cormorant cull in Ontario and they need your support
Cormorants are migratory birds that eat small fish in fresh and salt water and migrate from all over the USA and Canada and have been persecuted for decades. Even during the pandemic when only essential workers are meant to be out, the Ontario government is still paying and sending people in boats to a bird sanctuary island 25 miles off shore to kill cormorants. These birds are not Ontario’s to kill, Deborah points out these are the same birds that fly all over north America and migrate back and forth so you don’t have to be Canadian to send this politician an email.

Animal Party Episode 106 The Future for Human Socialization After Corona Covid 19
Deb Wolfe summarizes the essential facts about pets and Corona Covid 19 and asks Dr. Stanley Coren about the future after the pandemic. Dr. Coren uses research on human behavior and human history to make intelligent predictions about how humans will socialize post pandemic and how long it will take. Will there be good effects like less pollution and less stressful lives or will it all go back to the way it was before the pandemic? Will China close its wet markets? And how long will it take for us as a world to recover and move on?”
Dr. Coren states that 28% of North Americans live completely alone, and many of them are either younger or older people. “Will the pandemic isolation make people living alone want to find partners to live with?” 68% live in dense urban settings and in high rises 52% say they don’t know their neighbors names. “Will that change? Will people go back to traveling on planes and cruise ships?” Dr. Coren is able to bring facts together from recent events like SARS and historic events like plagues in our human history and combine that information with human psychology studies to predict how our world will look after Corona. Dusty Rainbolt, author of ‘Cat Wrangling Made Easy’ (& many others) discusses her new book ‘Cat Scene Investigator: Solve Your Cat’s Litterbox Mysteries’ and takes questions from host Deborah Wolfe about various cat behavior topics. If you think your cat likes to be hugged or likes rough affection you are probably mistaken. Discussing several scenarios of multi-cat politics Deborah asks Dusty ; ‘Is hierarchy unavoidable’. The answer is yes. But hierarchy with cats isn’t always as it is with humans or dogs. They have time share, and other values that makes their hierarchy situational depending on a few factor Dusty discusses. In the news, Air Canada has changed policy to prohibit pushed-in faced dogs from flying. Deb and Dusty discuss why this may not be a bad thing. Deborah asks Dr. Stanley Coren to explain how dogs are equal to a 2-3 year old child and challenges him with examples that seem to show advanced abilities like the puppy who saved a building from fire and the golden retriever who kept his owner safe and warm in the cold last week in the news. Empathy and altruism are part of the dog and 2-3 year old makeup explains the Professor. We know that dogs work better for rewards when given intermittently but why does rewarding dogs (and humans) only sometimes work better than when rewards are given every time?

Three brutal attacks on elderly couples near Vancouver by pit bulls sparks breed ban demands while in Montreal the SPCA got an injunction to stop a breed ban and the Province of Ontario has one in place. Many American cities and entire European countries have passed breed bans against pit bulls and sometimes other breeds too like Rottweilers, but do they work? Are pit bulls that different from other dogs? They are over represented in fatal bite statistics but is that stat relevant to the mutt you might meet at the dog park who looks like a pit bull? Deborah asks Stan these questions and points out that she’s experienced other breeds that more dangerous and met many pit bulls and pit bull crosses who are lovely. Dr. Stanley Coren explains the truth about pit bulls, Staffies, Rotties, Cane Corsos, Dogo Argentinos, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Jack Russels, behind the stats and stories and gives you solid advice for you and your kids on how to avoid being a bite victim. Can you tell the bully from the victim in a dog or cat quarrel? A cat lying on its back or offering its belly may attack seconds later while a dog doing the same is totally relaxed. Sometimes their body language is the same but sometimes each species is very different. Does a wagging tail always mean happy pet?

Then along came Pilots N Paws and the idea that a pilot flying somewhere for business or pleasure with some space in the plane could take the dog or cat from where it is unwanted in a shelter situation to a home that is ready and waiting using a network of volunteer drivers and short stay layover foster homes and pilots to get the trip done.

The fact that vaccines based on the same concept are still given legitimacy is a troubling sign that this recent decision will not benefit pet health overall. PetLifeRadio.com - Animal Party Episode 37 Fostering Felines
‘How many sniffer dogs did it take to keep the royal couple safe at their wedding last week?’ Today’s show is all about rescue and the gratitude you get from rescued pets. Susan Kars joins us to talk about her work fostering cats for Vokra. Teaching a cat to trust and then giving it up can be tough she explains, but she finds fostering cats very rewarding and she keeps on doing it. She describes how volunteers are placed first with very easy to handle cats, ex-pets and that the job of fostering is relatively easy but hugely rewarding. Her latest cat in residence can be seen on the Vokra website at www.orphankittenrescue.com along with many others who need homes.
Fostering helps by keeping cats (and dogs) out of cages until they can find forever homes. It also allows the foster moms and dads to give to a cat and bond with a cat and do good work while not incurring the costs of cat ownership. For adopting homes, it allows them to truly get to know and see the cat or dog that is in foster care before they bring it home and they continue to receive support and advice as needed once the foster pet is home with them. PetLifeRadio.com - Animal Party Episode 23 CatsCenterstage.org and Cat Fancy
Have you ever wondered if all cats are born with blue eyes? Or How hot does it get in a closed car on a summer day and how fast does it heat up? These answers plus a recipe for home made weed killer and homemade flea spray are at this party with Deborah Wolfe and her guest, Joan Miller Vice President of the Cat Fanciers’ Association & All breed Judge, joins Deborah to talk about CatsCenterstage.org a website made for lovers of every type of cat from pet pedigreed to feral and all the many ‘cat-next-door’ types. For the first time ever the website is designed to represent and work for those who love pedigreed, feral and random cats and it offers a huge medical database to help cat owners figure out what to ask their own Vets when their cats are sick. There are games and quizzes for kids and grownups, information, stories, photos and the future is wherever you want it to go with this site which will be growing and evolving to meet the needs of those who post.
Deborah asks Joan to contrast cats to dogs a few times during the show comparing the distance between the pets we have know and their wild ancestors in both species. What you see is often what you get when it comes to mutts but with cats you really can’t judge a mixed cat by its cover. Deborah offers up some of her own experience with cats gone feral and cats doing tricks. Did you know that cats do agility (obstacle style) courses like horses, dogs and humans? No leash, no food; just something fun to chase and the cat dives through tunnels, clears hurdles and jumps for the love of racing. Check it out at CatsCenterstage.org and have some fun in the catnip section while you are there. Maybe you think you know a lot about cats; test yourself with the quiz that will challenge you- this show will inform you.

PetLifeRadio.com - Animal Party Episode 21 Telepathy With Animals is Not Just For Psychics!
Tim Link joins the party to talk about animals and how they think and communicate with thoughts. He can read your pets. Deborah asks him if they think in words or pictures or something else and he explains. Plus Tim does some readings for pet life radio listeners who emailed photos and questions. Why does one cat bully another? Can Tim help teach some cats to wait to be called before jumping up on their owner’s claws out? Tim does a special reading for Deborah and connects with Squeak the blue heeler who died June 2009. Find out what Tim receives from pets that are no longer alive.
Tim also shares lighter readings including a message from Thump who wants his owners to know that yogurt is okay but Thump wants meat and actually any scraps of any kind; He loves the variety and the surprise. Tim explains how all of us can send picture messages to our animals when we want to give them commands or make requests. At first Deborah was somewhat sceptical but since the show was made she has enjoyed amazing results from coupling commands and wishes with visual messages sent on purpose; the cats come quicker and are more polite. Sadie isn’t picking on Peekaboo much anymore and has become relaxed with all the other cats since Tim sent her a message. Check out this party and you’ll learn how to send messages to your pets. It is very easy and you’ll see results immediately.

PetLifeRadio.com - Animal Party Episode 20 Assistance Dogs for the Blind and Kids with Autism
The party gets started with a party joke as Deborah reads a funny paragraph about dog poop from the book, ‘A Year in Merde’ by Stephen Clarke. A whole lot of goldens, labs and mixes of the two are coming to the party and they are all so well behaved walking on their harnesses and laying down politely without raiding the buffet; these aren’t the rude Labs and Goldens we often see counter-surfing and begging -- they must be well trained ever so polite Guide Dogs. Barry Dunner explains what its like to walk the blindfold walk with only a seeing eye dog for eyes. And Deborah asks what exactly Autism support dogs do for the kids they serve.
Did you know the dog stops the child from rocking and helps in ways besides keeping the child from running away? Barry brings touching stories about the impact of the dogs he’s seen trained to serve. It costs $35,000 to train a Seeing Eye dog and the blind person pays nothing, but there is a wait list and demand is high. Barry and Deborah discuss the training, placement and the effect of getting a dog placed; it’s a ripple and everyone wins! You can find out more about Guide Dogs at www.bcguidedog.com

PetLifeRadio.com - Animal Party Episode 19 Inside the Wild World of Feral Cats
Marci Kladnik joins the party from Santa Barbara California where she works inside the world of wild feral cats.. Marci explains why TNR (Trap, Neuter & Release) is the best technique for feral cat colony management. Together Deborah and Marci discuss the lives of feral cats and the conflicts- real and political that occur between bird lovers and TNR cat advocates. When a feral cat population truly is threatening a vulnerable bird nesting area, the colony is moved; most of the time the conflict is based on myth not fact and the cats are actually helping the birds with rodent patrol. Eggs and chicks get eaten by rodents constantly on every farm unless either cats or poison are at work.
The Tweety vs Sylvester model just doesn’t match up with our rat, and mouse infested, pollution, and fertilizer reality. Why should you spay or neuter your cat? Deborah gives you the selfish, safety and training reasons to alter your cat, and Marci gives you the scary numbers. 3+1= 20 explains Marci who has a whole new kind of math she calls ‘Cat Math’. This party is full of take home party tricks; Marci shows you how to call kittens with a cooing noise so they’ll come and eat and Deborah tells you how to plant your garden with cats in mind- you can draw them to certain areas and keep them out of others just by choosing the right ground cover and plants.

Deborah asks Caroline Coile the most common questions she gets when on tour plus her own questions too; Are some cats gay? Do cats masturbate? Facts about the cat penis. What is the cat purr all about? Do cats hate car rides? Are cats bothered by sound pollution? Cats hear better and see better in most ways than dogs but their sense of smell though worse than dogs. PetLifeRadio.com - Animal Party Episode 14 - Join the Olympic Party, Vancouver 2010 -- Animal Style with Deborah Wolfe
We all know a cheetah is faster than a man running, but is a cheetah faster than a gold medal speed skater? Find out how humans rank against animals in sport. Deborah shares the results of the Camp Good Dog Dog-Olympics so far with guest camper dogs competing in several events including hockey! A big thank you to the working dogs of the Olympics as Deborah explains how avalanche, airport and police dogs are selected, trained, and assigned to the Games.
56 dogs are keeping the Games going and horses too with the RCMP. The British and Russian press has been blasting Vancouver and the Olympics with criticism which is interesting given that they are next to host and given that Britain has no medals and Russia has lost face winning fewer medals than they’d hoped and losing to the Canadians (yay) in men’s hockey last night. Men’s hockey seems to trump all in both Russia and Canada even though it is Canadian women that bring home hockey medals most ( and hopefully will again tonight). In fact 13.5 of the 16 Canadian medals won so far were by Women; this is partly because in Canada laws, rules and norms dictate that men and women get equal access and equal funding for sport (almost) and that puts our women at an advantage over the rest of the world’s women who take a backseat to their brothers. Perhaps some countries will notice this and support their women more in future.
Perhaps women’s ski jumping will get their turn! Politics and Olympics to overlap and this time Nature is getting heard too. ‘You say protest, I say party!’ shouts one group of Olympic loving Canadians. Deborah gets to the core of the protests and explains the facts behind the legitimate concerns for antipoverty initiatives, and on the animal side - for bears and salmon. In fact, for the first time ever in Olympic history, First Nations are official hosts here in Vancouver-Whistler, B.C. for these 2010 Canadian Olympic Winter Games and this is giving them a platform to reach international ears with their message of no more trophy bear hunting, and no more salmon farms. Find out why it matters so much and how these creative people are getting their message on camera. If you can come to the Games, it is well worth it and very family friendly; the Police are doing a terrific job and they are everywhere you go smiling. Free live music, performers of all sorts from jugglers to dancers throughout the downtown, Yaletown and at every suburb venue all connected by skytrain plus free admission to big deal places like the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Olympic pavilions makes this a giant street party.
Big Screens show star moments, gold medal finishes and get crowds fired up as they dance and sing with the many different Canadian bands. For those listeners here right now in Vancouver, please take the time to get away from the Games and get out in Nature. Deborah describes a few quick easy side trips you can take to see eagles, bears, artists blowing glass & making beads, get spa treatments at a natural hot spring with more eagles to view en route, check out the sea wall downtown on foot or by rental bike or ride the skytrain just for the view of it all over town. And if you’d like to do something good for wildlife and still have a terrific fishing day, check out sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River, out of Mission, B.C. (45 min east of Vancouver) and you can get your own ‘big fish photo’ with a prehistoric fish that is the biggest on earth.
