Megan Jane - “Touched by strangers on broadway”

There you are!  It’s another episode of After the Gig and this time it’s with badass Nashville based drummer, Megan Jane.  When Megan isn’t on the road or recording with a variety of different artists such as Chrissy Metz, Kree Harrison, Lauren Jenkins, Erin Enderlin, Misa Arriaga, Sonia Leigh, Hailey Steele, Hannah Dasher and others… She is in Nashville playing with her band Sidepiece.  In this conversation we get into our Berklee College of Music experiences,  road stories, the San Diego,  LA, Nashville music scenes, and how to be when you’re in a touring band.  At one point during the conversation Megan also turned into my therapist by discussing some of the challenging mental aspects to being a bandmate and touring musician.  Please enjoy this episode of After the Gig!   Email the podcast! Today on the podcast I have the drummer for the national touring act Bronze Radio Return, Rob Griffith.  Rob and I have been friends ever since we went on tour together in 2010.  Bronze was nice enough to let Dan Mills open for them and follow them around the north east region, and I can say that touring and playing music with those guys is an experience that I will cherish and remember forever.  In this episode I rant about the Chase Rice concert situation,  the state of the music industry, what it takes to run a DIY touring band, my “how did you join Carbon Leaf?” Story, and much more.  I hope you enjoy, and tune in next week for part 2 of this conversation!   A week after we recorded this episode, Rob tragically lost his brother.  My thoughts and prayers are with the Griffith family, and this episode is dedicated to the memory of Allan David Griffith.  RIP   Music from this weeks show:   Intro: “Down There” by Bronze Radio Return   Outro: “Still Wandering” by Bronze Radio Return   Bronze Radio Return Shreds! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ioWC26nPvI   Support the podcast! www.patreon.com/afterthegig   Email the podcast! “A little history, and a rant.”

Today on the show, I share a couple of excerpts from one of my collage textbooks.  The book is called “Black Notes” and it was written by my African Studies professor, William Banfield.  This book discusses the evolution of black music in America.  I feel like it’s important for a music podcast like mine, to educate people on the history and important impact black music has had throughout American culture.   There is also a rant on Facebook word policing and social justice warriors that may or may not make any sense… I really hope it does.  Facebook and Twitter has evolved into this place in which you’re not allowed to be anything other than perfect.  Where, Even though you stand for something good, you can be torn down for something you said when you were 16.  A place where we yell at one another and never listen and try to find any common ground.   Who are these perfect people? I’m definitely not one of them.  Enjoy the episode!   “Black Notes” by William Banfield https://www.amazon.com/Black-Notes-Musician-Post-Album-Paperback/dp/B00FDV8GDE/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=black+notes+William+banfield&qid=1591882271&sr=8-1   The Kickstarter for Carbon Leaf's 21st Recording is LIVE! #51 Gavin Castleton - “It would be tight if my next record was all sex raps”

Gavin Castleton - “It would be tight if my next record was all sex raps”   This week on the podcast is one of my all time favorite artists, Gavin Castleton.  We were able to sit down at my place in Providence around the time of the Monty Are I reunion show to discuss his history as an artist from RI.  He is truly an original and it is inspiring to listen to him speak of songwriting on such an intellectual and conceptual level.  Gavin has a new album out now called “Here you go” that is available at gavincastleton.bandcamp.com.  I hope that you take the deep dive into Gavin’s music, and history as an artist.  Enjoy!   Also, I will be on my personal facebook page this Thursday at 8pm for my “Over the Hump” Facebook Live show.  Hope to see you there!   Support the podcast! www.patreon.com/afterthegig   Email the podcast! #43 Dean Anshutz - “I can’t let my girlfriend know about this”

Well well well, if it isn’t Dean, the kid from Youngstown himself.  This episode was a long time in the making, but we finally sat down in the confines of stateroom 5556 on the Rock Boat to make it happen.  Dean brings originality, quality, fun, and a pinch of that guy from the local flee market to his playing and personality.  If he’s not on the road with Red Wanting Blue, he’s cruising the local thrift stores and record shops to find that rare, but wonderful unknown artist.  Or even better, the perfect shaker for the next recording project.  This was truly a pleasure, and I hope you enjoy!   Support the podcast! www.patreon.com/afterthegig   Email the podcast! #41 Jessica Martin - “What are we trying to do here?”

Jessica is a managers manager.  You know how I know that… I don’t, but if I did it would have sounded super cool.  Jess (as I affectionately call her), has been Stephen Kellogg’s manager for many years and has recently taken on a new client in Brian Dunne.  In my experience with working with Jess over the last few years, I have enjoyed her personal and professional approach to meeting my needs and I’m overwhelmed with joy to have had this conversation with her on my show! (Was that too over the top?)   All Jokes aside, Jess knows a TON about the music industry and what it takes to solve an artists day to day challenges along side setting them up to accomplish their big picture goals.  She’s one of my favorite people on the planet and I hope you enjoy the episode!   Support the podcast! www.patreon.com/afterthegig   Email the podcast! #40 Brian Dunne - “How are you going to put on pants, let alone write an album?”

Brian Dunne is a fantastic singing songwriter that I met while playing with Stephen Kellogg.  It turns out, we actually went to college together as well! I have been a fan of Brian’s music for a long time and getting to sit down with him before his gig in Newport was truly a pleasure.  Brian has a new album coming out on April 10th called “Selling Things” and he was kind enough to play a song off of this upcoming album for us.  Stay tuned till the end to check it out.  Enjoy the episode!   Support the podcast! www.patreon.com/afterthegig   Email the podcast! #37 Eric Hutchinson - “There’s no right or wrong way to do it”

This week on the podcast I am joined by the great Eric Hutchinson.  Eric and I met back in 2016 when I saw him open for Rachel Platten with his great band The Believers.  Later that year, Eric did a co-bill with Stephen Kellogg in the UK, and a couple months after that, I filled in for his drummer on a few shows in the midwest. Yes… I was a Believer for a week, and it was glorious.  Eric’s music is fun and insightful, and you’ll have a hard time not loving one of his albums.  You can check out all things Eric Hutchinson at www.erichutchinson.com. Today on the program is the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Brandon Luciano.  You remember Brandon… The guy from episode 2.  Every time we get together to talk we have too many beers and end up taking 3 or 4 pee breaks.  So, to make this more digestible, I have broken it up into separate episodes.  Like the last time, Brandon and I cover a very wide range of topics such as meeting your idols, fame, my story about the night Tom Petty died and much more.     In todays intro I mention After the Gig’s upcoming Patreon page.  To learn more about it email the show at [email protected]   Music from the show:   Intro: “Blue Blue Blue” by Mike Slap h   Outro: “What I Be” by Mike Slap h   Instagram:  @afterthegig @jhumphreymusic  #ontourwithjhumps
