Susan Joseph is a clear-voiced Los Angeles based singer/songwriter/producer with a unique poetic sensibility. Releasing her work as SackJo22, Susan rapidly emerged as one of the most reviewed and remixed artists at the ccmixter.org, a richly creative, international on-line music platform that promotes sharing culture through the use of Creative Commons licenses, and where she now serves as the site’s Creative Director. Since her involvement with ccMixter, SackJo22 has been propelled into the world of sharing culture by releasing her music under Creative Commons licenses that simplify the licensing process for re-use of creative content. She has been remixed hundreds of times by producers all over the world, and her voice appears in thousands of videos. She is a featured artist on several compilation album releases, as well as being featured in album releases by producers who included her a capella stems in their productions. Since 2009, SackJo22 has partnered with Evie Ruth and Angela Grillo (“The Reflective Collective”) in the development of multi-media theatrical works created to express the transformative power of dreams and other subconscious material. Their approach integrates various mediums such as text, music, video, song, sculpture and movement to create performances that are informed by traditional theater but expand into experimental realms as they delve deep into themes and imagery inspired by individual and collective dream work. Through their unique creative process, SackJo22 and her collaborators have been developing boxWINDOWdoor: A Play on Dreams. Iterations of this work have been presented in various venues in Los Angeles, including the Hollywood Fringe Festival, as well as at the International Association of Dreams Conference in Berkeley, where the works have received awards and accolades. In 2013-2014, The Reflective Collective created PRAYER, a song cycle composed by SackJo22 to be presented as a multi-media performance that expresses art as prayer, and prayer as art. Interested in new ways of sharing musical experiences, Sackjo22, in collaboration with Gurdonark, mobilized the ccmixter community to create a body of music that was presented as a sonic art installation at the RAM Gallery in Oslo in 2009. Subsequently, she also helped coordinate the community-based sonic installation presented at Artlab in San Diego, California in 2010. In addition, SackJo22 provides music curation and supervision for film makers, and has helped source music for multiple independent productions.
